I’m going to be honest, I didn’t think I would have anything to share this month, but then I opened the document that keeps all the articles I collect for this feature and voila! I had apparently read and filed away some interesting things, I just completely forgot it happened during the month of June (what is time?).
That said, I do not have a closing video for you this month. My YouTubing has been exclusive to Lindsey Ellis who, while a wonderful video essayist, has too many good ideas to share just a single video. (If you’re going to fall into a rabbit hole with Lindsey Ellis, I recommend starting with her video about Hercules.)
That being said, these are the interesting things that crossed my plate last month.
I usually think McSweeney’s is a super pretentious literary journal, but they sometimes release something that doesn’t drip with high-brow displeasure. Such as this story about Indiana Jones discovering his bid for tenure was denied. It’s pretty dang funny.
Fan-favorite sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine is gearing up for its sixth season on NBC, and that type of fame is getting into the head of Stewart, the 11 year-old corgi that plays the dog Cheddar. Read how many treats Stewart is demanding on this profile at Entertainment Weekly.
When I shared this Politico headline with my friends, we all came to the consensus that this is perhaps one of the most tiring headlines we’ve read about this administration: “Meet the Guys who Tape Trump’s Papers Back Together”
Benedict Cumberbatch is best known (to me) for his roles as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC hit Sherlock, Dr. Strange in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and John Harrison/Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. You could say he’s a hero for playing a couple of them on the big screen (Khan aside), but NPR reported evidence that his herodom extends to his personal life as well when he rescued a cyclist from muggers in London. Negro (Spanish for black) is the name of a dog who lives on a university campus in Colombia. Universities are certainly places of learning, and Negro learned the basic principles behind commerce when he began exchanging leaves for treats at a local shop. Read the full story on The Dodo.
I have three things to share for THIS MONTH IN SPACE.
1. NASA’s Curiosity rover found evidence of ancient life on Mars. Sure, it’s not totally confirmed that life actually existed on Mars, but I think we all know that life totally existed on Mars. We’re just one step away from officially, scientifically confirming it. Read the official press release at NASA.
2. Speaking of life on other planets, scientists also found building blocks for life on Encaladus, which is a moon of Saturn. The Cassini probe picked up the data and scientists recently untangled it to come to this conclusion. USA Today has a good write up about it.
3. This next point is unrelated to life on other planets. Although Ceres and Pluto are two dwarf planets that are very far away from each other, scientists think they’re actually twins, or at least were created in the same place and then separated after their creation. As I said, I don’t have an interesting or unique video to share with you this month. Instead, I’m going to show you this photograph taken by Instagram user Martinoman. It’s of a Waffle House in Nashville, Tenn., with the total solar eclipse in the background. This is perhaps one of my favorite photos of last August’s eclipse I’ve ever seen. If I could describe the aesthetic, it would be “Modern American Gothic.”
